Westward home

We’ve been here for one week exactly and tonight’s our last night in Israel. We planned our visit according to the Jewish Sabbath when literally everything in Jerusalem takes a rest from Friday sundown until Saturday night. Since we arrived on a Wednesday, we spent two nights in Tel Aviv and then rented a car to spend the weekend in Tiberias. By Sunday when everything was operating like a NYC Monday, we drove down to Jerusalem to spend our last three nights. Tomorrow, we begin our westward-bound segment of our …

As Henry detailed earlier, our flights to Tanzania were pretty exhausting, so there was no reason to believe that leaving there would be any easier. After several days of sun and fun in some of the most beautiful beaches my privileged feet have ever walked on, we left the Zanzibar island and flew back to Arusha in mainland Tanzania...

Please note: We have long left Jordan. We have since gone back to Hong Kong for Christmas and New Year and also visited Japan, India, and Tanzania. As usual, I am behind. This place was a godsend. We left Egypt in a peak state of fatigue, frustration, and defensiveness...

I love Japan. And with some regret, I have to admit that travelling in Japan was really all about the food and less about its rich culture, history, or religion. In short, my stomach took over and did most of the travelling for me except for maybe the skiing I attempted in Sapporo...

(The editor will note that this was started over three weeks ago but he will probably not tell you that we only have one laptop and “Angela’s post” had to wait for “Henry’s post” to catch up and finish his bit on Egypt. Please note though that Angela does sincerely appreciate Henry’s help with blogging.)

Delicious! Hummus in Jordan

Delicious! Hummus in Jordan

We had to try this place touted on our Rough Guide’s book as the best restaurant in Madaba, if not all of Jordan. In fact, it was strongly recommended on Trip Advisor as well as by our hotel owner and the local souvenir vendor. You could order an array of mezzes (appetizer) dishes and call it dinner...

Re-do of Istanbul

Re-do of Istanbul

Posted on 12 Dec 2009 by Angela | No Comment

Though I loved our first five days’ adventures in Istanbul, I couldn’t help but walk away with the feeling that it was a densely woven machinery of tourism operating at maximum capacity. The admissions to sights and attractions were expensive and often had hidden “supplementary fees” for especially popular parts...

Editor’s note: This was written about a week ago in Turkey. We are in Egypt now.
—————————————————-
Leaving Singapore on our red eye flight to Istanbul, we learned that Istanbul’s time zone runs six hours behind that of Asia. During our five days in Istanbul, we acclimated our internal clocks effortlessly. That is, until we arrived in Cappadocia in Central Turkey. Here, because the main attractions have so much to do with its natural beauty, maximizing day light is essential to anyone’s daily itinerary. Of course, one of the most recommended things …

What have we been up to?

Henry and I have been taking a big blog break since we left Hong Kong to start our tour of Asia with our favorite New Yorkers, Jen and Nance. I would go into better detail, but I think Henry is working on something already. But briefly, we first flew into Beijing and spent an awesome five days before flying into the southwestern province of Yunnan to wreak more havoc for another five days. By the start of the third week, we were working our way towards the southern part of …

Today is our last day in Vietnam. It was only last Sunday that we walked across the border into Vietnam from Yunnan, China. There, we started touring Vietnam from top to bottom. We started at Sapa, moved south to Hanoi, down to Danang and Hoi An, and arrived in Ho Chi Minh City two days ago. We haven’t seen much of HCMC, however, because we opted to do an overnight trip to the Mekong Delta. We arrived at My Tho early yesterday afternoon. This is a city that’s considered one …

Vroom, Vroom – Sunday, July 26th

Today was the day we were supposed to visit Henry’s friend, Flavia in Omaha, Nebraska (approximately 615 miles away). Being true to ourselves and knowing how slow we’ve been progressing, we again brainstormed with reality and rescheduled with Flavia for Monday. It was a good decision; the haste and rush was getting on both our nerves. Since we were taking our time and we happened to be in Indianapolis for the NASCAR Allstate 400 at The Brickyard...

Our favorite bus stop in Marietta, Ohio – Saturday, July 25th

Posted on 27 Jul 2009 by Angela | No Comment

After our morning coffee, we set out via the (according to Rand McNally’s atlas) “dot, dot, dot” scenic route 50 from Grafton towards Ohio. Along the way, we stumbled into the charming historic town of Marietta, Ohio. It was such a pretty town, we had to stop. Truthfully, we happen to pass by the cutest bus stop ever and, like tourists with no shame, we began taking out our respective cameras...
