Liard River Hot Spring

A few people we met in Vancouver and Alaska have raved about this place called Liard River Hot Spring. It is a natural hot spring situated on the Alaska Highway in northern British Columbia. We didn’t drive through that stretch of the Alaska Highway when we headed north. So on our way back, we decided to give it a visit. What a gem! The hot spring is part of a provincial park, with no entrance fee. A nice boardwalk takes you from the parking lot to the hot spring pools. There …

“Master” Nigel

Editor’s (that would be Henry) note: The events below took place about a month ago when we were heading north to Alaska via British Columbia and Yukon. It was in the town of Smithers that we met Nigel, right there by Buckley River. Nigel is both Canadian and American. For the past few years, when the fishing season opens, he begins to accrue his winter food stores of homemade, smoked pink salmon. He has been driving by the river with his wife, daughter, and dog to fish his daily limit of …

What’s your sign?

Editor’s (that would be Henry) note: the events below took place about a month ago when we were heading north to Alaska via British Columbia and Yukon. Many months ago, before we even left NYC, Henry was reading about the Signpost Forest at Watson Lake in the Yukon Territory of Canada. We made a mental note then hoping that we’d remember to design a sign. It was never mentioned again until we arrived at Williams Lake, BC. There, realizing that as we drive further into the remote Yukon, we’ll run out …

More on the Dalton Highway

So we managed to drive from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay and back. Took us five days and four nights. We got a second flat tire on the return trip, during a blizzard, when we were about to go up the fabled Atigun Pass, and with only about an hour of daylight left. We were still 3 hours away from a service station. That got me a little worried. Fortunately, despite being covered in mud after the tire changing, the spare held up. September is moose and caribou hunting season and we …

Hi from top of the world

3 days after leaving Fairbanks, we finally reached Prudhoe Bay last night. This is as far north in Alaska as you can go by road. We have been driving for three days and saw nothing but truckers and animals. Then all of a sudden, at the end of the road, is this town with bright lights called Deadhorse, where thousands of people work 24/7 in the oil industry or related businesses. It is the strangest thing. Deadhorse is nothing to write home about. In fact, it is just a huge …

Sarah Palin centerfold

Posted on 15 Sep 2009 by Henry | No Comment

We have been traveling in Alaska for close to three weeks now. Surprisingly, we have not run into much Sarah Palin propaganda, or even any discussion of her. We finally got a little dose today at a souvenir store in Fairbanks. Thought I would share…
