Today was our first romping day in Hong Kong with our friends from Brooklyn, Nance and Jen. It’s pretty exciting b/c this is their first trip to Asia and our agreed rendezvous point was Hong Kong. Since Henry was born and raised in Hong Kong, he was super excited to show them his hood. Thus, Henry carved out a very well-thought out itinerary for their 2 full days in Hong Kong. Hong Kong….home?

I left Hong Kong when I was only two years old. Whenever I return for a visit, it must be that I so enjoy the shopping, the eats, the novelty of spending 95% of my day immersed in Cantonese that I find myself contemplating the what-ifs of a parallel universe in which my parents never immigrated. In this parallel universe, I doubt that I would have had the opportunity for higher education. I’d be fluent in Chinese and maybe Mandarin too. I would not be fluent with English at all. …

My Third Birthday in Hong Kong

I have not passed a birthday in Hong Kong since I was two years old. I don’t recall but seriously doubt it was celebrated at all given my parents’ busy work schedules back then. By the time I turned three, my family had already immigrated to the States. So, today is quite special. The occasion is made sweeter because I get to share it with my in-laws and my extended family. There is really not much agenda when we are in Hong Kong. Just spending time with family, kids and friends, although that has kept us quite busy. Last Saturday, we met up with my friend Connie and her 15-month-old. Then we went to my niece Jana’s 4-year-old birthday party.
