5 weeks and counting…

My last day at work is July 24. Angela finishes even earlier than that. If we leave on the 26th, that puts us at T-5 weeks today.

My task list is expanding like mad, with very few tasks completed. I have been spending all my time researching on Alaska, a place I find so fascinating yet intimidating. The idea of driving to the end of the world has always captured my imagination, so for the first part of our trip we are committed to driving all the way to where the road ends in Alaska. That will be Prudhoe Bay. Ironically, it’s also where 25% of the oil we consumed is produced.

If time wasn’t not a factor, I would love to get to Prudhoe Bay, swing around and drive all the way back south to the tip of Argentina, and from there take a boat into Antarctica. Wouldn’t that be a great trip?!

There is so much that needs to be done and researched and read before we leave. So much gear to purchase. So many logistical issues to plan and manage. So many lists to make. At this point, aside from the one month that we will spend in Alaska, we don’t even know where we will be going.

But not knowing is a blessing and a luxury few travelers can afford. Angela and I will have all the time in the world. We can go wherever and whenever. We will not let hotel or flight reservations tie us down. If we get there, we get there. If we can’t find a hotel room, we will sleep in our makeshift bed in the back of our truck. If a flight is full, we will take the next one.

Such is the beauty of our trip.
